1. In April of 2010 the largest oil spill in history affecting the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas was a result of the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The oil rig was located approximately 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana and owned by an offshore-oil-drilling company called Transocean (Pallardy, 2020). The night of the incident there was a surge of natural gas that caused an explosion and killed 11 workers and injured 17 (Pallardy, 2020). Once the explosion occurred the oil from the rig began to spill into the ocean.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross, “A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources” (What is a disaster, 2021). In the case of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill it was categorized as a disaster because it was an event that both disrupted the function of that area and caused human and environment losses. The oil spill polluted beaches in surrounding areas including Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. As an aftermath of the event, majority of the wildlife in the area was either destroyed or greatly harmed.
Discuss the factors that can influence the effects a disaster may have on a community or region.
Aside from the direct environmental damage this disaster caused, there are other factors the influenced the region as well. With damaged beaches in that entire area, tourism and beach activities that might’ve brought in income for those areas was no longer available. In response to the event, President Obama enacted a moratorium on offshore drilling which resulted in 8,000-12,000 unemployed individuals (Pallardy, 2020). It took several months until all was returned to normal. In any disaster it is important to consider the financial hardships that may result from it, but most importantly the bigger picture of individuals in the surrounding areas whos jobs are effected even though the incident doesn’t pertain to them.

2. In 1991, California experienced one of the largest chemical spills known in its history. On July 14th, a tanker with 19,000 gallons of metam sodium was being hauled by a Southern Pacific Railroad train down the Cantara Loop before 15 of the cars plunged into the Sacramento River. This spill contaminated 36 miles of river killing fish, aquatic organisms, and plants. It affected other wildlife surrounding the area. Not only was the water contaminated, but so were the air and soil surrounding the area.

Dunsmuir is known for its scenic views filled with natural attractions that bring tourists from all over to hike, fish, and explore. As mentioned above, much of the aquatic life surrounding this area was killed in the spill. Nearly 1.1 million fish in total. Residents that lived along the weather developed many symptoms and quickly flooded hospitals. Residents experienced headaches, shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, and vomiting. This spill took part in the closure of small businesses and resorts that surrounded the area.
What nursing interventions would be a priority for these victims?
Metam sodium is a pesticide and classified as a probable human carcinogen. Respiratory, neurologic, and ocular symptoms were reported at the time of the incident and persisted in some for approximately 13 months after the incident. Patients that experience an exposure must be removed from the area immediately. Patients experiencing airway complications should be placed on oxygen and need for ventilation assistance should be constantly monitored. It is important that the patient undergo decontamination procedures that include removing clothing, and flushing the eyes under running water. Cardiac monitoring is also important as dysrhythmias may develop.
