One of the greatest wonders in Astronomy is the question “Are we alone in this universe?” In 1961, Dr. Frank Drake, created his famous equation, not for purposes of quantifying the number of civilizations, but as a way to stimulate scientific dialogue at the first scientific meeting on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Below is that very equation:

{displaystyle N=R_{*}cdot f_{mathrm {p} }cdot n_{mathrm {e} }cdot f_{mathrm {l} }cdot f_{mathrm {i} }cdot f_{mathrm {c} }cdot L}

Write an in depth, scientific, describing each component of this equation. Then do a bit of research on why this equation changed the field of astronomy (specially exoplanet research and cosmology.) Finally, try to incorporate yourself into this situation. What does this equation personally mean to you? You can certainly get into the philosophical perspective of this or you can try to sway this paper into a different path. Use only relevant papers written by scientists to aid you to understand this equation.

A shift from Medical models diseases prevention to healthcare promotion

According to the World Health Organization, healthcare promotion
involves enabling people to control their health (Rural Health
Information Hub, 2020). It encompasses different areas of social and
environmental interventions aimed at benefiting and protecting
individual people’s health. Also, by promoting good health, the quality
of life is improved by addressing and preventing the root cause of ill
health. This shift from the medical model of disease prevention mostly
focuses on treatment and cure (U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, 2020). Also, medical models mostly focus on the specific
efforts to reduce the development and severity of an illness and other
morbidities (Rural Health Information Hub, 2020). Such an area that
experienced a paradigm shift from medical prevention to healthcare
promotion controls diabetes.

In the recent approach, healthcare providers have stressed changing
the attitude and educating the people on a healthy lifestyle to avoid
getting diabetes. This has, in turn, allowed the people at risk of
contracting this chronic illness to be able to make active decisions
that contribute to positive healthcare behavior and outcomes. Also, the
healthcare promotional programs have targeted individual persons and the
community at large (Rural Health Information Hub, 2020). From a
community perspective, the nurses have strived to improve communication,
which raises awareness on healthy behaviors for the general public.
However, individual persons have been targeted by educating and
empowering them on behavior change and actions through increased
knowledge. These educational strategies have included tailor-made
diabetic courses, training, and support groups (U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, 2020). The nurses have been at the forefront
of this transition, where they ensure that they can locate the
vulnerable populations and provide them with the necessary training and
materials needed to make informed decisions.

promotion is very relevant today. There is a global acceptance that
health and social wellbeing are determined by many factors outside the
health system, which include socioeconomic conditions, patterns of
consumption associated with food and communication, demographic
patterns, learning environments, family patterns, the cultural and
social fabric of societies; sociopolitical and economic changes,
including commercialization and trade and global environmental change
(Kumar & Preetha, 2012). In such a situation, health issues can be
effectively addressed by adopting a holistic approach by empowering
individuals and communities to take action for their health, foster
leadership for public health, promote intersectoral action to build
healthy public policies in all sectors, and create sustainable health
systems (Kumar & Preetha, 2012).

Nurses are positioned to contribute to and lead the
transformative changes occurring in healthcare by being a fully
contributing member of the interprofessional team as we shift from
episodic, provider-based, fee-for-service care to team-based,
patient-centered care across the continuum that provides seamless,
affordable, and quality care (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). These
shifts require a new or an enhanced set of knowledge, skills, and
attitudes around wellness and population care with a renewed focus on
patient-centered care, care coordination, data analytics, and quality
improvement (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017).

Transformative changes occur in healthcare for which nurses,
because of their role, education, and respect they have earned, are
well-positioned to contribute to and lead (Salmond & Echevarria,
2017). To be a major player in shaping these changes, nurses must
understand the factors driving the change, the mandates for practice
change, and the competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) needed
for personal and systemwide success (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017).
This article discusses the driving factors leading to healthcare
transformation and the role of the registered nurse (RN) in leading and
being a fully contributing member of the interprofessional team as we
shift from episodic, provider-based, fee-for-service care to team-based,
patient-centered care across the continuum that provides seamless,
affordable, and quality care (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). This new
health paradigm requires the nurse to be a full partner in relentless
efforts to achieve the triple aim of an improved patient experience of
care (including quality and satisfaction), improved outcomes or health
of populations, and reduced per capita cost of healthcare (Salmond &
Echevarria, 2017).

Discussion question 2

Recovery Following a Disaster

Respond to the following question based on this weeks lesson and, if it’s relevant, include your own personal experience.

  • Describe at least two ways data from health care informatics systems can be saved for retrieval following a disaster.
  • Describe
at least one financial and one nonfinancial cost associated with a
disaster that affects health care informatics systems.

Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them.

Discussion response 1 Morgan

way that data from the health care informatics system can be saved is a
data backup, either cloud based or on a backup server in-house (O’Dowd,
2018). Saving to a backup can be effortless, as it can be done in
real-time with no real concerns or issues, but the backup would have to
be HIPAA compliant as well as secured against possible hacking (O’Dowd,
2018). Retrieval would be easy as the backup can be accessed from the
health care facility and all the information re-installed on computers,
which may take time, but can be done (O’Dowd, 2018). Another way that
data can be saved is through printing it out and having paper charts
saved in an area that is secure, although this is more time-consuming as
things have to be printed out and stored, and can only be accessed by
pulling the charts and getting the papers (Becker’s Health IT, 2012).
One non-financial cost associated with a disaster would be the amount of
time that it would take to recover the data, reinstall things on
computers, possibly have to wait for new computers to be delivered
depending on the disaster (O’Dowd, 2018). The financial concern would be
the amount of money that it would take to have an off-site or other
data backup, the amount of money paid to those that maintain it, etc.

Discussion response 2 Erin

for data back-up recovery in healthcare is crucial for when cyber
attacks and natural disasters strike. One way data can be saved for
retrieval following a disaster is by implementing a cloud based data
system. These services allow for data to be stored and recovered on a
remote cloud based platform. Files are easy to access and maintain in
the cloud. It is also very important to choose a cloud computing service
that has a strong data secure center. Another way in which data can be
saved for retrieval following a disaster is by utilizing secondary
market hardware. Organizations can save from 30 percent to 70 percent if they choose to use secondary-market (Links to an external site.) products such as previous generation backup systems, switches and routers (5 Steps for Saving Your Data in a Disaster, 2020).

One financial cost associated with a disaster that affects
health care informatics systems would be the cost of having IT personnel
trying to safeguard the community infrastructure. There are many
devices that use informatics in a healthcare system like tablets, smart
phones, digital assistants, and handheld computers. All of these devices
have wireless local area networks that would need to be assessed as far
as recovery of data goes. A non financial cost in this situation would
pertain to the re-booting of all patient medical devices, hospital
computers, etc. This may take a while which unfortunately could delay
patient care and resources.

The adoption of new medical technology almost invariably increases
health care costs. Yet, Americans strongly favor ongoing innovation,
availability, and use of new technology (Shi & Singh, 2019). Tapping
into technology such as telehealth and or telemedicine will affect all
populations but will continue to enhance care coordination for each
population if current demographic trends resume. We are driven by
instant access to healthcare information and its convenience. Medicine
will eventually adapt to new technology where patients will be satisfied
with access to care and physicians can be expedient with their time
management but still retain the therapeutic relationship with their
patients (Cox, 2019). Of course, we run the risk of equipment
malfunction, safety breech and complexity, along with the cost of
research and development but technology solutions allow constant
support. Implementing remote monitoring and providing faster more
efficient health care options/services for patients. In the future, the
health care system is likely to focus on those technologies that promote
a greater degree of self-reliance and self-care for patients, with
remote monitoring to ensure effectiveness and safety (Shi & Singh,

Today I watched as the first American received the vaccine for

COVID-19. She was an RN. The second, was an ED doctor. Both have had

up close and personal experiences during this pandemic. I have watched

several nurses plead with communities to take this virus seriously. All

are at their breaking points. All have seen how deadly this virus can

be. Many doctors and nurses are pulling in shifts that can go as long

as 24 hours all too many times. Health care professionals are burned

out. This is not a myth. It is the reality for so many across the

country (Yong, 2020).

Burn out is not just because of the pandemic. Health care burn out
was an issue before the corona virus reared its ugly head here in the
states. Providers are the first line of detection for many serious
physical and mental health issues. They strive to keep patients out of
hospitals by helping treat issues early on. However, there is a
shortage of providers. Education is an expense that fewer and fewer are
willing to take on. This shortage is contributing to a related issue:
burnout (Plante, 2020).

A shortage of medical professionals is not the only reason
for burnout. Another cause of this is the fact that with every hour of
patient care, there are two more hours of paperwork that must be done in
order for reimbursements to come through for hospitals and physicians.
This allows for fewer hours dedicated to patients. Without this
connection, patients are not receiving the care that they are in need of
(Plante, 2020). This problem actually goes past what the ACA can do.
As a nation, we need to figure this out. Otherwise, the nation will
really be in a place that needless and unnecessary.
