1.

For this discussion I will discuss how Marcia’s concept is applied to choosing my college degree and career. I have always worked in the medical field (and currently still do) after working in other job settings, then landing in the medical field I thought that I wanted to be a nurse, I initially started in identity achievement which was having explore several other options thinking that I was committed to my chosen career path. After taking classes and several years of continued medical field work I came to realize that I did not love my classes or job, just in the sense of extremely long work hours and nothing short of exhausting. I moved into Marcia’s Identity Moratorium which means that I was now in no commitment to my job or schooling and was looking for other options to explore, gathering information, trying out other activities because I wanted to find a career and degree that was a good fit for me, Berk, L.E. (2018). I have been in Identity Moratorium for a while now but I’m sure getting close to picking my master’s program I am down to two programs both of which I would love but it’s deciding more of long-term goals and where I want to be. According to Berk, L.E. (2018) culture strongly impacts identity it can construct a sense of self continuity despite rather significant personal changes. Most adolescents use an individualistic approach which entails, enduring personal essence, constantly transforming self and coherent

2

Identity diffusion is characterized by lack of both exploration and commitment. (Beck, 2018) In my field as a Children’s Case Manager I see this all too often. Adolescents have a lack of direction both from their current environments and sense of self. They have no sense of commitment to values or goals and have no desire to explore any alternative options. Unfortunately, most adolescents that are characterized as identity diffusion lack the direction from the supportive standpoint whether that be parents, teachers, counselors, extended family, peers, or anyone they “look up to”. Culture and ethnicity can also play a role in an adolescent’s lack of ambition to commitment and discovering their values and goals. In my Culture , back in those days women were meant to just stay home and take care of kids. However now a days culture has been changing big time and now women are needed to work and be enterprising for the family. now a days Identity development is a very progressing development in all cultures and it is a lifetime process and there are number of factors that can play a role in identity development.Parenting practices, school environments, community resources, interactions with peers and adults, cultural beliefs, and society are all influences that can determine one’s identity. (Beck, 2018). Gaining education can also lead us to the development of culture, because school is where we see lots of divircity and we tend to explore different cultures

3.

There are several sociocultural and cognitive factors that play a role in risk taking from teenage drivers. Young drivers are more likely to partake in risky driving behaviors like, running red lights, speeding, making illegal turns, tailgating, passing dangerously, and failure to yield for pedestrians, due to their over confidence of their driving capabilities,State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles, (2011). Teen drivers are also less likely to wear seatbelts, detect hazards within their driving environments, young adolescent drivers are also more likely to drink and drive and be a part of a serious or even fatal accident while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles, (2011).

Young adolescents also perform less than par in decision making compared to adults, Berk, L.E. (2018). Due to the prefrontal cognitive control network and the brains social and or emotional development network, Berk, L.E. (2018). Teenagers tend to less often than not evaluate other alternatives and will most likely not fall back on their well learned intuitive judgments. According to Berk, L.E. (2018) adolescents take risks without any harmful outcomes it can heighten their sense of invulnerability that’s why adolescents need protection from high risk experiences until their decision making improves.

According to CDC, (2010), we as adults, parent’s mentors, instructors should make teen drivers aware of the eight-danger zone which are the leading causes of teen crashes and how to help prevent them as well as reminding our young adolescents how important it is to always wear their seatbelts and to stay off all technology, that if it’s a real emergency they can safely pull off to the side of the road to respond to a text or make a phone call. I believe the driving age of 16 is still acceptable.

4.

Some factors that may play a role in teenagers’ risk taking while driving can be age the CDC report showed that 16 years old are most the most likely group to have an accident and that the risk is even higher within the first month of having their license. According to the DMV, “The crash rate for 16-year-olds is 3.7 times higher than drivers of all ages.” Males have a higher rate of accidents than females and the rate increases with other teenager males in the car. A male drive is more apt to use less caution and will drive with a riskier behavior. Time periods also is a factor since studies show most teenage accident occur from 3pm to Midnight and the days most often are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Teen drivers between the ages of 16-19 are more likely to judge a situation incorrectly and not recognize the danger adding to a higher rate of accidents as well. This could be contributed to their cognitive factors and they have not yet fully gained the skills of a person that has been driving for years. Other risk factors for teenage accidents including fatalities is speeding, drinking and driving, under the influence of drugs, using their phones and not wearing a seat belt. According to the CDC, “In 2015, only 61% of high school students reported they always wear seat belts when riding with someone else.”

Factors that contribute to an adolescent being able to drive would be maturity, if they show a sense of maturity (mentally) and that they are responsible and can be trusted that would be best. At this stage their cognitive skills should have developed to where they are displaying knowledge, working memory, attention, meta-cognition and cognitive self-regulation.

From my own personal experience with my children I feel that 16 years old is too young to have a license and to be able to drive alone. I think that having a permit at 16 years old and driving with a parent for a year and then at the age of 17 or 18 being able to get their license and drive on their own.
