Assignment # 2 – Argument Analysis – Rhetorical Strategies (Co-authored project)

(Due 3/19)(15 %)

You will work together with a co-author (preferably), and you will both get the same grade.

Read Torture’s Dirty Secret: It Works by Naomi Klein and write an analysis of the text’s argument, with particular emphasis on the rhetorical strategies. Bear in mind that you are NOT entering into a conversation about the topic. Instead, you are expressing your opinion about how the text is working. Make a judgment about how strong and persuasive the article is, and explain how well the rhetorical strategies used work, or not.

Write an approximately 3-page long paper, typed, and edited in normal font (12) and M.L.A. formatting.Papers with too many elementary spelling and grammar mistakes will be returned as incomplete. Late papers will be penalized. (I’ll accept emailed work only in exceptional cases or if you had obtained my permission in advance. In case you have to email me your assignment, you also have to bring me a hard copy for grading the next time you come to class. If you fail to do so, the paper will count as late.)

You are to respect the University rules regarding plagiarism.Anybody who will be found guilty of plagiarizing will absolutely fail the class.

Steps to follow:

1.Set the stage for your analysis by explaining the importance and/or actuality of the issue.

2.Write the rhetorical précis of the assigned reading.

3. Is the article well-written? Consider some these questions, but do not answer them directly. Incorporate some thoughts along these lines into your evaluation:

How clear are the claims? Are they sufficiently backed up? How entertaining, convincing, or informative is the whole piece? What is the overall effect of the appeals on the reader? Which appeal(s) seems stronger? Why? How do the appeals work together?

4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the argument considering the author’s use of rhetorical strategies. Explain three rhetorical strategies that Klein is using, and decide how well they serve their purpose.Each time when you are discussing a strategy, you have to: first, identify that particular strategy and provide a quotation; second, describe how it works, and third, explain why it is used – what purpose it serves in that context. (You will write at least one well-developed paragraph for each.)

5. Conclude with a brief comment (probably one paragraph) revealing your opinion of the issue of torture, to give finality to your analysis.

Make sure that have nice transitions and integrate these steps in a smooth-flowing essay.

The data warehouse committee has received the first 4 phases of the Data Warehouse Design Document. They are concerned about how transaction management, performance monitoring, database tuning, backup and recovery, and overall database management problems will be handled.

Worked Example

Please refer to the Worked Example below for an example of this assignment based on the Problem-Based Learning Scenario. The worked example is not intended to be a complete example of the assignment but will illustrate the basic concepts required for completion of the assignment and can be used as a general guideline for your own project. Your assignment submission should be more detailed and specific and should reflect your own approach to the assignment rather than just following the same outline provided in the worked example.

Week 5: Part 2: Argumentation Conclusion

Envision that you now have to present your solution to your client. You need to make a formal presentation to a group of stakeholders, and you need to be prepared to answer their questions. As a final step in the project, you will create a 5-slide PowerPoint presentation plus title and reference slides in which you provide the following:

• In the Notes pages of each slide, and based on the context of the information on that slide, provide a narrative of 2–3 paragraphs of your rationale for the data warehouse (DW) design document that you are recommending.
• Discuss the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis). How will implementing the DW support the company’s SWOT?
• On each slide, identify the evidence that you have to support the arguments.
• All sources that are used to support your argument and solution should be cited both in-text (on the slide or in Notes section) and on a References slide in APA format.

PROMINENT SOCIAL ISSUES AND THEIR EFFECT ON DEVELOPMENT

You are to turn in a TEN PAGE, DOUBLE-SPACED(12 FONT MAXIMUM) paper (Not including the title page and reference page.)

Choose ONE current social issue that is prominent in American culture and society today that you believe has had a major influence on development in children and young adults today. Examples might be: immigration, racism, sexism, increased longevity, terrorism and national security, increased divorce rates, single parent families, the economy and unemployment, gay rights, reproductive rights, social networking, technological advances, etc.,etc.You may choose your own topic,subject to your instructor’s approval. Be prepared to turn in a description of your topic and a partial list of your sources by MARCH 6. (the topic I chose was increased divorce rates.

Think about how the issue you have chosen has changed over time and affects the current generation’s development in a manner different from their parents and grandparents. Then seek out at least three FORMAL, ACADEMICALLY DERIVED sources of information on this topic other than your textbook. If you use on-line resources, remember that Wikipedia does not count for a primary source, although it may lead you to primary sources. Primary sources could include scientific articles or chapters of books. Formal sources can be supplemented by (BUT NOT REPLACED BY) newspaper, magazine, or online blog articles.

This is meant to be an exercise in reflective and critical thinking about the subject matter of the course. The more you demonstrate an understanding of the basis and application of the concepts of social and psychological development, the more likely you are to receive a high grade. Your paper should include an introduction in which you briefly describe the point of your paper, a discussion of your findings from outside sources (this will represent most of the body of the paper), and a conclusion section that highlights the main points and ties them together. Relevant personal experiences may be includedONLY IF they can be related to the research articles you have found. If you are able to relate your findings to one or more of the theories we are studying this semester, that will earn you additional points.

Questions about space

• Where is the entity located?
• What is its extent?

Questions about attributes

• What are the attributes of the entity located there?
• Do its attributes match one or more criteria?

Questions about time

• When were the entity’s location, extent, or attributes measured?
• Has the entity’s location, extent, or attributes changed over time?

Simple questions like these can be answered effectively with a good printed map, of course. However, GIS becomes increasingly attractive as the number of people asking the questions and the required level of precision grows, especially if they lack access to the required paper maps.

Questions concerning multiple geographic entities

• Do the entities contain one another?
• Do they overlap?
• Are they connected?
• Are they situated within a certain distance of one another?
• What is the best route from one entity to the others?
• Where are entities with similar attributes located?

Questions about attribute relationships

• Do the entities share attributes that match one or more criteria?
• Are the attributes of one entity influenced by changes in another entity?

Questions about temporal relationships

• Have the entities’ locations, extents, or attributes changed over time?

Notice that all of these questions deal with where things are, how things relate to other things, and how things change or persist relative to these locations. These are the kinds of questions that GIScience and professionals in the geospatial industry are prepared to answer.

These are hard to answer through GIS:

explanatory questions–such as why entities are located where they are, why they have the attributes they do, and why they have changed as they have. In addition, organizations are often concerned with predictive questions–such as what will happen at this location if thus-and-so happens at that location?

In general, GIS software packages cannot be expected to provide clear-cut answers to explanatory and predictive questions right out of the box.
