Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review the video How the Sharing Economy Is Changing the World | HowStuffWorks NOW (Links to an external site.) (2016), and read the Forbes article Airbnb and the Unstoppable Rise of the Share Economy (Links to an external site.) (Geron, 2013).

You are going to create a proposal for a business venture based on the principles of a sharing economy.

• First, do an observational scan of your immediate environment, its resources, and the resources you presently have available to you.
  • Make a list of any shareable resources that you would be willing to exchange with others.
  • What do you have that you would be willing to share with others in some way?
• Next, consider your present situation. What are you missing that, if you could somehow obtain it, you would be better able to accomplish what you would like to in life?
• Based on your analysis, outline a proposal for a shared economy business that you could start immediately with little or no money.
• Describe your proposal in a Canva (Links to an external site.) document using images that reflect the elements of your shared business. Feel free to use the images available in Canva or upload your own. Your proposal should include the following:
  • Identify the resources to be shared and what is expected or desired from the business.
  • Describe the exchange of value expected from operating the business.
  • Assess what you will need to implement this shared economy business.
• Save and post a link to your Canva document along with a brief summary of your shared business idea to the Interactivity 1: The Sharing Economy discussion forum.
• Review the responses of at least two classmates, and offer your assessment of their ideas relative to:
  • How willing you would be to participate as a customer or partner in the business.
  • What you might change to make the business even more valuable.

Throughout the semester (May 6 – August 3, 2019), students will be asked to collect information about earth science that is reported in the news. The log should include stories related to earth science as covered in class (e.g., new research findings, earthquakes, volcanic eruption, floods, etc.). You should probably have one entry per week, and make it the top story of that week. For example, if an earthquake hits Chile and a volcano erupts in Indonesia in the same week, the only entry in your summary should be the one with the bigger impact. The typewritten log will be handed in on July 31, and should be submitted by email as electronic file.

The final typewritten earth science log should include the following information:

Topic (earthquake, flood, hurricane, etc.)

Date (be specific; if there is a start and end date, list both; if there is a time, mention it)

Location (be specific; countries like ours are big, so a country name may not be a sufficient location)

Why was it reported in the news? (impact on ecology, economy, humans, etc.; provide specific information, such as total economic loss due to property damage, casualties; or for topics not related to hazards, think of events like climate change talks, policy decisions on tar sand exploration, etc.)

Sources of information (newspaper/magazine articles, television/radio reports, internet URLs; they need to be reliable, so someone’s twitter, blog, instagram, etc. should not be your source of information; be specific here, cbc.ca is not enough)

Entries in the log should be in chronological order and part of the grade will be based on its organisation. Make the instructor’s life easy…appearance does count!

While teamwork is encouraged, the log must be yours, written in your own words. Logs that are exact copies will not be marked.
