Unit III Case Study:

You have been hired as a consultant by your town’s emergency management coordinator to help develop emergency action
plans. Your first task is to assess the hazardous material risks at a local gas station. The station has one 30,000-gallon
underground storage tank compartmentalized to hold 10,000 gallons each for three gasoline grades and one 10,000-gallon
tank for diesel fuel. The station has four pumps, and each one can deliver all four products. Also on site is a 2,500-squarefoot
concrete block building used for the cashier and retail sales of service station and convenience store items.
The station is located at a busy intersection near the center of town. It is adjacent to several other local businesses that do
brisk business during the day. Across the street from the station is a large housing development with an elementary school.
Behind the station is a city park with playgrounds, baseball fields, and a large wooded area.
To complete the assignment, address the components below.
1. Describe three scenarios related to the fuel in the tanks that would require emergency response. The General
Behavior Model (GEBMO) is a good tool to assist in hazard identification. Consider physical, chemical, and natural
hazards that may be contributing factors as well as the potential for environmental releases in nearby workplaces.
2. For each scenario, complete the actions below.

a. Identify ways to eliminate or reduce the risks through engineering or administrative controls.
b. Discuss emergency response requirements, such as who responds and what equipment is needed, and
establish the level of emergency response required for the incident.
c. Recommend the level of personal protective equipment required for responders.
d. Summarize the HAZWOPER training required for the gas station employees. This should be based on your
response to 2b.
Support your discussion with at least three appropriate references with in-text citations. Your submission must be a
minimum of three pages in length and a maximum of five pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages. APA
style is required.

1. Read the broadsheet of the Frost Fair in the 1680s and look at the activities on the Thames. What does it tell the modern observer about the effects of “this unparalleled frost”? Can we differentiate between ‘extreme weather’ and climate change

2. Read the Weather Diary of Sir John Wittewronge. From the months you selected, address the following questions:

What observations does Wittewronge make about his local weather?

What are Wittewronge’s concerns or preoccupations in keeping the diary?

What can we learn about the seasons and patterns of life from Wittewronge’s weather diary?

3. The earliest surviving air temperature records in England were made in Oxford, by John Locke in 1666-67. John Wittewronge owned a mercury barometer that measured air pressure. How sustained or anecdotal is this type of evidence? (Wittewronge’s diary and the Macadam reading will help here).

4. Weigh the ‘scientific’ evidence with the evidence based on human records in understanding the climate, weather and climate change (the Frost Fair broadsheet and Behringer and Macadam readings will be helpful here).

Essay 1 – Family

Context:

This week, we are thinking about “ideal” families and reading about how Americans frequently compare their own families to these ideals. Soto recounts childhood memories of his own family, and Carbone and Cahn present a more academic study of how family and marriage now mean different things for different social groups.

Prompt:

Leo Tolstoy (a Russian novelist) wrote that all happy families are alike, but that each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Taking into account your own experience and the two articles we read this week, write an essay that explains what makes a family happy or unhappy.

Requirements

• Minimum of 1000 words.
• In your essay, reference these three sources with quotes and summary:
  • your personal experience (which can be about your own family, or about other families you have observed)
  • Carbone and Cahn
  • Soto
• Include an introduction, focused body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
• Do not worry about including a Works Cited page, but be sure to include in-text citations. See the example below.

Tips:

• It is important to stay focused in this essay. Choose one aspect of family life to focus on. For example, if you think stable relationships make for happy families, write an essay that focuses just on that. If you think that high parental expectations make for unhappy families, focus on that.
• Include not only quotes from the two articles, but also include some summary of the key points you’re referencing.
• Be sure to use what you have learned about theses and TEAL paragraphs.
• Use evidence and examples from the text and your experience to support your ideas.
• Here is an example of how you might use evidence to support your ideas. This is a body paragraph:

Happiness is not about having a “perfect’ family. In Gary Soto’s story “Looking for Work,” the narrator compares his Mexican-American family to the middle class white family in the television show Leave it to Beaver. Unlike in his family, the kids in that fictitious family “hopped into bed with kisses and woke to glasses of fresh orange juice and to a father sitting before his morning coffee while the mother buttered his toast” (22). It is clear that the narrator’s family is not like this, as he is painfully aware, but still he is loved. We see his mother’s love when she pushes him to go outside at the end of the story: “‘It’s still light,’ she said. ‘Later you’ll bug me to let you stay out longer. So go on'” (24). The narrator’s mother loves him, and that is what makes his a happy family.

My family also did not look like Leave it to Beaver, but our love for each other made us happy….

  The three primary federal laws regulating union activity are the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) (1935), also known as the Wagner Act; the Labor Management Relations Act (LMRA) (1947), also known as the Taft-Hartley Act; and the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (1959), also known as the Landrum-Griffith Act. These acts reflect the attitude of the times in which they were enacted, regarding unions and the power struggle between unions and management.
  Historically, the legislation, laws, and labor movements at both state and federal levels have experienced periods of harmony and conflict. A study of union history shows how legislation and lawmaking can be affected by popular opinion. In the early nineteenth century, it was not uncommon for any group employee action to be labeled a criminal conspiracy. The change in the view of the law from a focus on association to the means affected to achieve an objective occurred with the decision in Commonwealth v. Hunt (1842). This case was considered a milestone in the labor movement; however, it did not settle the legal issues, and the courts continue to struggle with the legality of union activities. The public view of the violence and unrest accompanying labor actions was often that employers were responsible, particularly in cases where strikebreakers were hired. Public sentiment and unsatisfactory common law led to the passage of the NLRA in 1935.
